156. solar power

9 junio 2010

I happened to visit my old high school with my sister today. Lo and behold what do I find: new overhangs being installed in the parking lot. And guess what...they have solar power panels on the roofs of said new overhangs!

WOW is all I can really think to say. I feel lucky (and uncomfortable) to have been able to be apart of a seemingly affluent neighborhood and school system, but at the same time couldn't the school (or district or county or state, etc etc) find a better way to spend money towards education? This is the same district that did not include sports in the budget. Granted, who knows. The solar power panels could be a donation or whatever...but it still makes me extremely uncomfortable that this high school has solar power panels (unnecessary right now in my opinion) while a couple blocks down the street there's another high school lacking buildings to house their students, up-to-date textbooks, desks, and quality teachers. Invisible borders manifest themselves in very apparent ways.
